Over 100 former foster youth spent the day in Washington's capitol shadowing Congress members. The shadow day participants had the opportunity to share their stories and learn more about how Washington politics works.

On May 24, 2017 Rep. Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) spoke about the more than 100 young people participating in the Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Program in a speech on the House floor. Rep. Bass started the program six years ago during her first term in Congress. On this day, foster youth met with nearly 100 members of Congress in a day filled with joy and excitement.

On May 24, 2017, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) made a statement on the House floor about the governments responsibility to care for the foster youth they created as a result of removing children from their parents. Legislative efforts are also being made to close the loophole between sex trafficking bills and the creation of foster youth.

U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, D-Amsterdam, on Wednesday announced that Sabrina Petrie, a 25-year-old SUNY Potsdam student, joined him for "Foster Youth Shadow Day," an annual event in which advocates spend part of the day with members of congress to raise awareness of family welfare issues.

During National Foster Care Month, Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI) welcomed a former foster youth in Washington Wednesday, showing her the ropes in Congress. The Saginaw native, Snow, joined Kildee in Washington for Foster Youth Shadow Day.
